![]() ![]() Bone Thugs’ members went in 10 directions at once, with a dizzying array of solo albums and smaller group projects, before fully reuniting the following decade. After 1997’s sprawling double-disc The Art of War, which included the slow-rolling smash “Look into My Eyes,” intra-band conflict derailed their career for a time. He featured on early single “Foe Tha Love of $,” their second Top 40 hit, but it took a posthumous tribute to Eazy, “Tha Crossroads,” to make Bone Thugs superstars (and Grammy winners). West Coast G-funk, generous with hooks and indebted to ‘70s soul and funk, was a clear influence, so it made sense that Bone Thugs’ major break came courtesy of N.W.A.’s Eazy-E, who signed them to his Ruthless label. They started in Cleveland, where no top-selling hip-hop act had come from before, and their music was different from the outset: The quintet of Bizzy Bone, Flesh-N-Bone, Krayzie Bone, Layzie Bone, and Wish Bone specialized in intricate high-speed rhymes about street life that carried unusual melodic contours and multi-part harmonies. Exhausting their limited resources, they exhibit the confidence that they would succeed. "Eazy's shown us much love since we've been here," says Wish. After hanging back stage only a few months ago, Bone has been down with him since. "Our main mission was to go down there and get to Eazy-E," says Krayzie. Through various connections, they got back stage at Eazy-E's Cleveland show. When they found out he was doing a Cleveland show, they were intent on getting back home in time to meet him. However, the knew they'd have to leave Cleveland to find their success. The group hails from Cleveland, Ohio - one of the funkiest states in the Union (home of The Ohio Players and Parliament). Backed by a characteristic thick Compton flow - produced by Eazy-E, DJ Uneek, Rhythm D, Yella and Bone - their music is intoxicating. Together with staccato freestyle rhymes, the result is a funky strain of hardcore hip-hop. They sing, but not the average love songs - they harmonize about everyday street life and their surroundings. Their style is a mixture of that thug roughness and their street resourcefulness. They rap and sing about stealin', hustlin' and scraping to get by. To generalize, Bone is reality rap and street corner harmony combined. The duality is what makes them, and their debut Ruthless/Relativity LP, Creepin' On Ah Come Up, unique. Trues referring to being true - true to themselves, true to each other, true to the street Harmony referring to their harmony in music and in life. Thugs stands for Trues Housing UnderGround Shit. Together along with Lazy Bone, Bizzy Bone and Flesh N' Bone they call themselves Thugs N' Harmony. "Cause gangsters get caught up," says his partner Wish Bone.
